The Grist Report: Indiana Is Becoming a Sunshine State

Indiana might be known as one of the major coal states — it houses the largest inland coal refinery in the country and ranks in the top 10 states for carbon emissions. But the Mammoth Solar facility, located in Starke and Pulaski counties, aims to green up the grid, generating enough electricity to power nearly a quarter million homes. Over 60 landowners are involved in this project that will span 13,000 acres.

Currently, less than 2% of Indiana’s electricity generation comes from solar. Still, the transition to solar is in the works across the state. Four of Indiana’s electric utilities have made plans to close their coal-fired plants. About 15 solar projects spanning 1,000 acres or more each are being developed in the state in the next two years.
